The action group Äerdschëff concerns itself with the design and the construction of an ecological, off-grid and self-sufficient house in the Attert-Wark region in Luxembourg.
This House is inspired by the earthship concept invented in the 1970s by Mike Reynolds in the United States and is based on these five principles :
→ Self-sufficiency in water thanks to rainwater collecting ;
→ Self-sufficiency in waste water treatment via a filtering system and phyto-purification by plants ;
→ Self-sufficiency in electricity using photovoltaic solar panels that produce enough energy to power the building and heat the water ;
→ Self-sufficiency in heating and cooling : the building is heated with a wall system with inertia that stores the heat of the Sun captured by the South-oriented greenhouse ; a Canadian well, which consists of a mechanical ventilation system, ventilates the building and cool the inside temperature down ;
→ Self-sufficiency in food : use of the greenhouse to produce edible plants.
The goals of the action group Äerdschëff :
→ Raise awareness about eco-construction and post-carbon lifestyle ;
→ Build a community around an innovative project through the organisation of a collaborative construction site ;
→ Develop and highlight the local activities and skills ;
→ Enhance local, natural, ecological and recycled materials (e.g. : tires, earth, clay, straw, glass, hemp, wool…) ;
→ Offer a healthy and self-sufficient habitat ;
→ Develop to term a relationships network in the region through the organisation of different activities within the building : trainings in eco-construction, permaculture and sociocracy, a people’s café, conferences, debates, screenings of movies and documentaries, cooking workshops or games for adults and children, concerts, a small restaurant, a weekly distribution point of healthy and local products, associative and student activities…
