Workshop – The Art of Composting, 16.06.2012.
The Art of Making Compost
The value of compost has been known to humans for thousands of years. In recent decades, chemical fertilisers and synthetic pesticides have rapidly depleted life from our soils. By choosing to make compost, we actively restore this stolen fertility and reduce our waste in the process.
General Information:
The workshop will take place on the 16th June 2012.
The working language will be mainly English, with translation to French/Luxembourgish as needed.
Morning
Gathering 9:30 for a 10:00 start.
Our day will begin by highlighting the importance and the multiple benefits of making your own compost. We will then dive into the science behind the composting process and look at the diversity of factors that influence its outcome. Examples of various composting methods will be displayed on site, offering a clear understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of each method. We will gather appropriate material and build a compost heap step by step.
Lunch:
13:00-14:00
A vegetarian lunch (gluten free/ dairy free options available) will be provided accompanied by refreshments and some of our own home brews!
Afternoon:
14:00-17:00
The afternoon theme will be ‘teaming with microbes’ as we dive into the fascinating world of micro-organisms and learn how to work along side them. Preparing compost teas and building wormeries (vermicompost) are both on the menu!
As our day comes to a close, the space will be opened for a discussion on the potential composting has in transforming waste streams in our local areas!
